FASD and Substance Use

Fetal alcohol spectrum disorder can affect learning, memory, attention, impulse control and adaptive functioning. Support is more effective when it carries the plan into real situations instead of assuming that understanding in one setting will automatically transfer to another.

01

Make the environment carry the plan

Use predictable routines, visual cues, repeated language, supported completion and trusted people where appropriate and consented.

02

Reduce vulnerability

Debt, coercion, exploitation and unsafe peer relationships deserve active safeguarding attention. Keep explanations concrete and revisit them in the context where decisions occur.

03

Avoid assumptions

Difficulties with recall or consistency should not automatically be labelled dishonesty or lack of motivation. Record what is observed, what is reported and what remains uncertain.
